The Story Part V

In the fall of 2008 I had a stack of songs in need of proper focus to complete an album a year in the making. I’d been recording multiple versions of these new songs since the end of 2007, but still hadn’t quite gotten any of them right. The songs were written to be played on electric guitar, I thought, but when I recorded them this way by myself (and with an electronic drumbeat) they sounded strange. As solo acoustic workouts (inspired by Lee Hazlewood’s REQUIEM FOR AN ALMOST LADY) they sounded too “demo.” So I sat on these recordings until I could consult with Chris.

When Chris came to Austin to attend UT we again recorded together as producer and artist. We talked about how I wanted a stripped down sound of guitars, light percussion, and piano. I even wanted him to sing some of the new songs since I had grown very tired of singing these tunes myself. We found time to record (on my Tascam digital 8-track) in a music room on the UT campus and in the living room of the apt. where I lived with my girlfriend.

The sessions produced the bulk of what became the album WATING GAME BLUES. Chris and I still needed to fix some tunes though and three songs, “Shake Me,” “Outside Looking In,” and “A Woman Worth the Trouble,” were basic tracked in November 2008 with further overdubs performed by Chris in December. In early January ’09 the album was finally compiled and finished. This album is the most odds and ends album I’ve yet made. It features songs recorded in at least 4 different places and spread out over about a year and a half. I like it fine, but the next one will be better!
During this time Chris also finished up his long-in the making album, MORE GENIUS BY THE POUND, and compiled a batch of special Christmas oriented songs for a holiday blog post.

As for me I put together an EP in December ’08 called MISS CRETIN PROSODY. The title track was a 12 minute noise freakout inspired by another blog, homemade lo-fi psych, which had kindly featured some of our “barnyard music.” The EP was filled out with two boom box songs from 2006 and a silly short fake ad I recorded.

In January our good friend and talented songwriter, David Feil (aka Golden Arrow Holy Face...check out his album SONGS FOR PORCHES VOL 1) sent me a song of his called “Dead Drunk” which I liked enough to cover and it kind of sparked a trend for the spring ’09 of posting “singles.” Chris recorded two “singles” and I made one (along with the “Dead Drunk” cover). This non album work wasn’t really anything new (remember Chris’ “America” from Nov. election season 2008). These were quick inspirations as opposed to longer “album-centric” works.

We also used the Spring to step out of the home recording bubble to perform and be interviewed. The interview was for an Internet radio/podcaster dude named RadioMike. It was fun, but I don’t know if the answers we gave were really the best they could’ve been. Then we (Chris and I as a duo) performed a couple of times at the Austin bar, Hole in the Wall. Both shows were good if slightly frustrating affairs. Chris backed me on clarinet for one and electric bass for the other. Chris performed some solo tunes as well. We got some groovy ideas for the new songs we performed that were to be featured on my next album.

In June of ’09 I began toying with the idea of movie making. Years ago I tried making movies (like countless kids) but failed due to the lousy and/or broken technology I was using. Now I wanted to make little music features on a zero $ budget. Using my girlfriend’s camera I filmed myself shaving off my beard. This became the first BARNYARD FILMS production. Set to the Plastic Uno (band) song, “Hair Pye,” the 50 second clip was enough of a success for me to want to film a longer work. I began working on an abstract documentary styled short movie chronicling the recording of my next album and a live performance in Grapevine, TX with my brothers.

This film, 12 minutes in length, was titled HISTOIRE DE MELODY BARNYARD. It was broken into three short sections for youtube and for easy viewing on this blog. The first chapter features audio taken from a podcast interview Chris and I did with RadioMike and is visually a mix of old and new footage. Chapter two has clips of a Jeff and Chris live performance in Grapevine, TX on July, 10, 2009 and recording studio clips set to the music of a new song of mine called “Helpless Child.” Finally, chapter three features more Daily brothers recording studio clips and the Chris recording of my song “Hobo Pennies.”

The recording sessions we filmed for the movie were sessions for my latest batch of songs (as of July 2009) grouped together under the album title BARNYRD, JE’TAIME. The idea being that of creating a sprawling classic double LP that recalled the “White” album, Todd Rundgren’s “Something/Anything?,” “Exile on Main St.,” etc, etc.

The album would be split into four sides (one CD). Side one begins with a baroque style organ piece composed and performed by Matt from a chord progression I suggested to him. This is followed by four songs recorded to digital 8-track. Side two is made up of songs recorded live to cassette tape. It begins with a version of “Oh You” performed at the same Jeff/Chris show in Grapevine filmed for the movie. The remaining cassette tape songs are all three Daily brothers playing live in the recording room. We play everything from raging electric rock to “basement tapes”-esque folk rock. Side three is made up of demos and sonic experiments. Side four is a return to the digital 8-track songs carefully recorded and mixed by Chris and ends with a different organ piece by Matt using the same chord changes from the intro organ tune.

Chris was busy recording and performing his own work at the same time as he was working with my music. From June through August of ’09 Chris worked on overdubs/mixed my songs, recorded a collection of old Chris songs and covers as the LIVE IN LESOTHO album, recorded 8 new songs that will form the ground work for another new Chris album in the near future, and performed live on several occasions. 2009 has been a good year in music for us.

to be continued...
